I really like the idea of the Take Action Bible, a Bible that gives ideas on how to make your faith active. There are many stories in the midst of the text of people taking action and some questions on personal take action pages, asking how you could take action in a certain way. There is a nice concordance in the back and it is a very useable and portable Bible to take with you. I also like that is NKJV, since that is what our family uses to memorize (our AWANA clubs use it, so we keep consistent).

I also like that Thomas Nelson has partnered with World Vision for a project. God's Word in Action is a very neat site, one that I hope catches the attention of Christians. I'll be blogging about the book Mugabe and the White African later this month, but I wanted to let you know that Point of View will air the documentary Mugabe and the White African on Tuesday, July 26th.

The film tells the story of Mike Campbell and his family of three generations of Zimbabwean farmers as they attempt to keep their farm under Mugabe's "land reform." The book Mugabe and the White African (Lion Books, distributed by Kregel Publications, July 15, 2011, ISBN: 978-0-7459-5546-9, $14.95) written by Mike Campbell's son-in-law Ben Freeth provides more detail regarding the family's struggles and court battles.The book chronicles the deeply moving and life-threatening struggle of a Christian family from Zimbabwe to protect their legally owned farmland, to protect the lives and livelihoods of all those working on the farm, and to live to see justice.

Freeth lays bare a beautiful but lawless land fouled by fear. A 'Clockwork Orange' state where racism, greed, and violence are ultimately humbled by almost unimaginable courage. Richly described, bravely chronicled, and utterly compelling.

Ben Freeth has an extraordinary story to tell. Like that of many white farmers, his family's land was "reclaimed" for redistribution by Mugabe's government. But Ben's family fought back. Appealing to international law, they instigated a suit against Mugabe's government in the SADC, the Southern African equivalent of NATO. The case was deferred time and again while Mugabe's men pulled strings. But after Freeth and his parents-in-law were abducted and beaten within inches of death in 2008, the SADC deemed any further delay to be an obstruction of justice. The case was heard, and was successful on all counts.

But the story doesn't end there. In 2009 the family farm was burned to the ground. The fight for justice in Zimbabwe is far from over--this book is for anyone who wants to see into the heart of one of today's hardest places and how human dignity flourishes even in the most adverse circumstances.

Pressing into Thin Places is a lovely little book. It is filled with short stories that contain poems and Bible scripture that uplift your soul. Thin Places are described as places where the veil between heaven and earth is a thinner, where you can feel the things of God in a more real way than in day to day living. I really enjoyed the stories and encouragement from Pressing into Thin Places. This is a great book for any friend, particularly one who is struggling with depression or a place in their life that is really tough. I think it is encouraging to any believer to read through these at a slow pace and ponder the love of God, snuggled up with a nice cup of tea (or coffee if you prefer).

Q: Your book is titled Pressing into Thin Places. What is a “thin place”?

In the Celtic tradition, a “thin place” is the place where the veil that separates heaven and earth is nearly transparent. It is a place where we experience a deep sense of God’s presence in our everyday world. A thin place is where, for a moment, the spiritual world and natural world intersect. It can be a sudden momentary awareness or profound unexplainable experience.

Q: Pressing into Thin Places is a collection of stories, experiences, and learned truths expressed through poetry and prose. How are you hoping that readers connect with the experiences shared and those “thin places”?

Through the book I wanted to share a few “thin place moments” and encourage readers to have eyes to see the gifts of thin places through their own experiences. There are moments when we do feel the divine breaking through into our world. We feel unified and connected with God. It is not an intellectual knowing; it is felt in the spirit. Every once in a while, God draws the curtain and lets us see. He gives us reminders that, though we are tethered to this earth, there is another realm of reality just as real. Every once in a while, He lifts the veil. He thins the space between heaven and earth. He lets us experience the “thin place.” Ultimately, He helps our faith.

Q: Pressing into Thin Places gives readers permission to be authentic and to acknowledge doubt, questions, even depression. Often we experience guilt over these sometimes realities, fearing they show a weak faith. But how can facing these circumstances or emotions actually strengthen faith and reveal the presence of God in our lives?

We all have ups and downs. We are emotional beings. This is part of life. But can we dial up different thoughts? Can we change our feelings? Many times, I believe we can. Not too long ago I came across a verse in 1 Samuel 30. The chapter talked about a time when David was defeated by his enemies, rejected by all those around him and discouraged to the core. In verse 6, it says, “And David strengthened himself in the Lord.” How do we strengthen ourselves in the Lord? I believe we do what a verse in Psalms suggests: “And then one day I went into your sanctuary and thought” (Ps. 73:17). We strengthen ourselves in the Lord by going into His presence and letting Him guide our thinking. Many of the Psalms tell us that David worshipped and meditated on the scriptures. This was no exception. He received new purpose, vision, and authority. He waited patiently to become king.

Q: Why do you think we fear admitting doubt or struggles with faith?

Fear wants to rise and speak to the bottom corners of our mind. It will remind us not to be vulnerable. We will remember what happens when we risk psychological safety or abandon feelings of superiority. We will remember our nakedness. We will feel the wash of old fears and the pull of old attitudes and the temptations of old behaviors. But our heart, where our choice and our spirit live, desires our Father and His Kingdom. And our Teacher taught us to pray.

Q: It seems that more and more we all encounter people who profess to believe that God exists, but the crisis of faith arises in God’s goodness. What do you say to the reader who struggles to believe that God is good and loving?

Jesus says we can trust our Heavenly Father. We are safe, we are protected, and we are guided when we cooperate with God’s purpose and God’s way of doing things. We become participants in the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of God’s grace on earth. Jesus reminds us over and over again that we must have faith. We must believe in the fact that we are safe and that “good” will result as we submit our will to His Way. This submission is powerful. It defragments our life and gives us spiritual significance and wholeness of soul. This submission results in the process of spiritual transformation. Along the way, we are rewarded by “faith surprises” as resources of the Kingdom of Heaven are available to make changes in us, in others, and in the way things are.

Q: What do you hope that readers will take away from Pressing into Thin Places?

At the crux of this message of greater connection with God is the gospel message. Jesus encourages us to see our short space of time on this earth in the light of eternity. He instructs us to remember that there are two realities: a physical reality and a spiritual reality. We are first and foremost spiritual beings called to follow Christ’s teachings.

The Spirit in Baseball is a children's book about the Fruit of the Spirit and examples of how it is shown to others in baseball. Each trait has a two-page spread with colorful illustrations and the example of how to demonstrate a Christ-like attitude in the game of baseball.

This book would be a great gift to a child who enjoys playing on their local baseball or t-ball team. A really fun little addition to the book is the hidden fruit picture in each of the traits. There is a page near the end of the book by Trot Nixon, a professional baseball player and 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series Champion. Mr. Nixon is married to Kathryn. There is also a Baseball Prayer and a page for autographs that would be fun for the child to have their team sign.

Branded is a thought-provoking book about how the Church relates to the culture to spread the message of Christ. It is not so much about a method of how-to, it is more about why-to. Mr. Sinclair explains how marketing works for corporations, how it changes over the years even for the same product.

I really have enjoyed Branded. It was a little uneasy to think of marketing Jesus. It isn't marketing in the way I initially thought he was going to mean, the WWJD, bumpersticker, Christian t-shirt way. It is more about living out the Christian life in the way that God's people should. Living a life where relationship is important and loving people deeply shines through for Christ. Not the health and wealth false gospel, but that life is hard and God works in ways we don't understand, but He is still good. Mr. Sinclair points out that if you don't believe in a product you can't sell it, weather it is vacuums or a relationship with a great God. So it isn't about pulling one over on people, it is about really showing the love of Christ.

I had many quotes from this book that I loved to read and reread, it just summed up the way I feel in many instances. I really enjoyed Branded and I think with the study guide it would be fun to do with a group and ponder what kind of difference we are really making. It is also really just a great book to read on your own.

That's When I Talk to God

That's When I Talk to God follows a young girl through her day showing that anytime is a good time to pray, otherwise known as talking to God. Children learn they can pray when they are afraid, joyous, have questions, whenever they need to. It is very nicely illustrated children's book. My children enjoyed this book as well, they like books about children and faith and this is a sweet picture of a Christian family.

The first time it was unsalted and I bought many boxes and this time it was salted, we do not care for the most part if it is salted or not. I am just so happy to have been able to stock up on both :) It may not have been the grassfed brand we prefer, it was a storebrand, but we praise God for the provision when non-organic butter is on sale for more than what we paid for organic. This is how we afford to eat organic :)

I enjoyed reading Fully Engaged, I think there are useful pieces of information for our hectic, but never really making a difference lives. Most points are very straightforward and easy to understand. Mr. Busacker has a very clear writing style, which I appreciate. I think that the recommendations are based on Biblical values. There is space to reflect on the dreams for your life in many areas including spiritual, physical, community, learning and several more. I would recommend this book to someone who is seeking more out of this life and recognizes the potential of the "could be".

We experience the bowls of wrath and the sounding of the trumpets.

I really enjoyed The Trigger. I love a good novel and one based on the end times is fascinating to me. I at this point do not have a set view on when Christians will be raptured, whether it will be pre-tribulations, mid-tribulation, or post-tribulation. I do know that no one knows the day or the hour and that Jesus Christ is coming back again! I feel like with the recent events related to Harold Camping, that I must mention that I feel great sadness for his followers and believers and even for Mr. Camping himself, he is deceived. And maybe because of that I was a little sensitive to the book and the situations in toward the end where the three men seem to know what the trigger will be and when the end will come. I did enjoy The Trigger very much it is a great novel and a fun read for the imagination.

False Witness

False Witness is a legal thriller. It follows Clark Shealy, bail bondsman, on a bounty hunt with the most valuable asset he could ever imagine- his wife's life. She is being held ransom for a man who has been in hiding from the Chinese mafia.

False Witness is an engrossing read, there are many twists and turns for the Shealys and the other characters in the story. It keeps the reader wondering what will happen next and on the edge of their seats. I really enjoyed Mr. Singer's style of writing and the fact it was not a predictable storyline, right up to the end. I give a hearty recommendation for this book.

False Witness also brings out a serious issue in our modern times, the plight of the Dalits in India. The Dalit Freedom Network is working hard to bring justice to these precious people and their plight. Mr. Singer is sending every dollar from royalties from False Witness to the Dalit Freedom Network. False Witness points to how helpful education is for the Dalits and what we can do to help.

Randy Singer is a trial lawyer, as well as author, I think that fact gives enriching details and authenticity to the story. Mr. Singer has authored another book, Directed Verdict,that I plan on looking into in the near future.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it is a great book for moms to read and be able to raise confident children and be able to look back and feel satisfaction in how they have prepared those children. I really found her explanation of the difference between controlling and being intentional helpful. There are many stories in the book from her family and her practice, showing both positive examples and negative results when parents aren't parenting in a way that is best for their children. Mrs. Hiekem gives God his proper role in this book and I appreciate that. There is practical information and hope for the teen years and how to build companionship and trust, but still be the parent. This is a book I hope my friends would read.

The Organized Homeschooler

When I first received The Organized Homeschooler I admit I laughed just a little. I am not organized. After laughing I was hopeful that the book would give me hope and tips that might help me become more organized. That is not what I read. This book comes across very condescending to me. I got the feeling if you are not organized you are somehow less spiritual. I also think there is a spiritually dangerous undertone about this issue.

One of the "Check It Off!" sections early in the book states that my children's success in homeschooling depends on my organization, umm, I don't think so. My goal maybe very different from the author's. We homeschool to raise our children to serve and love the Lord and live lives pleasing to Him, I think that is a heart issue that parents can address no matter how unorganized they may seem. I do see how organization helps, but to put organization as the judge of our success in homeschooling is a lofty place that I reserve for the Lord. My "Check It Off" would be something more like ~I realize that my children and the success of their homeschool experience depends on how well we have cultivated a relationship with their Lord and Savior.

Another "Check It Off!" is "I desire orderliness just as God does". That just sits with me wrong, for me to say I desire anything as God does, I don't know, I just can't say that I do. I also would like to see the clear Biblical references she is drawing this from. Maybe I feel like statements like this put us some how equal with God and I know I am not even close.

Another example is a statement about how other's statements (in regards to schedules) "reveal a variety of heart issues", ouch. Sometimes people don't agree on issues and sometimes there are heart issues (sin issues) involved, but sometimes not.

In summary, I think the book would have been better if it were more of an organizing encouragement and tip tool, than something that comes across as condemning in a situation where there is not a sin issue. I would have enjoyed a book of here is what works for me and this is how this area of organization will bless your family. Something more practical.

Planting Season 2011

Woo hoo! It has started. Planting season. So far I have broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, petunias, marigolds, lettuces, onions, and leeks in the greenhouse. Yesterday we started radishes, peas, and lettuce in the garden.

The strawberries are coming up and looking good in their bed and just today we spotted asparagus, I am really excited about that one. This year we can harvest a while, our first real time. The walking onions, walking garlic, iris, daffodils, and lilies are all up out of the ground. The chives look wonderful, the parsley did come back, and the other herbs are looking good. Some things got neglected last year and are still in the garden, onions, leeks, a couple carrots and they all look like they are just going to get bigger and we can harvest this year. A celery plant is also coming back up.

We planted a nectarine tree this year, that will be great in a few years. I am feeling the excitement building :)

Ok, I am really behind, I hate to even say how far. I am pressing on and hope to have a reading day this week that will catch me up close to where I should be. I have asked my husband to help with that and he suggested this week when we go out of town, might give me the chance :) I am hopeful.

I am without excuse, but I have started another Beth Moore Bible study and I am really enjoying it. It is the Patriarchs and we are just starting week two, I have learned much already and it is great to go back over sections in Genesis and elsewhere and have a fresh memory of reading those scriptures.

I am really enjoying this reading, it is already helping me to relate to other times when I am studying the word. Being able to recall what I have been reading and how it applies to another portion of scripture is great.

I did struggle a bit through the repetition of this week's reading, I have to admit I didn't really know that happened, particularly in the Chronicles. I hope I don't feel that way when I am in the Gospels reading at this pace, reading it over so quickly makes me feel like "I know, I know I have been here before". I had to look for new insight and details as I went.

Beyond Opinion is a very practical book for Christians, it is an apologetic work by Ravi Zacharias and others leading apologists. Beyond Opinion is a tool for Christians to know what they believe and to be able to answer questions from the world about the Lord and defend their faith.

I really enjoyed Beyond Opinion, even though it took me a while to read. To me it was a bit heavy, which is what I expected. I wanted to have a resource to improve the way I defend my faith and didn't expect simple answers. I really enjoy hearing Mr. Zacharias on the radio, especially when he does open forums at colleges and tackles the hard questions students are asking. This book felt like setting in on one of those discussions.

I would recommend Beyond Opinion for Christians that are looking to do just that and go beyond opinion with their friends.

Review: Almost Heaven

Almost Heaven is a story about Billy Allman. It is a story set in a small community in West Virginia, Dogwood. Billy's life is a hard one. He loves the mandolin and bluegrass and he decides he will get the music people in his hollow love to them and makes it happen by building a radio station buy himself in his home. Billy has a guardian angel helping to tell his story. Malachi is assigned to watch over Billy and protect him.

I really loved this book. Mr. Fabry is a wonderful story teller, it is one of those books you just don't want to put down and are pulled into Billy's life. Mr. Fabry uses the guardian angel in a very unique way in the writing of the book, there are alternating chapters written from Billy's perspective and also from the angel's. I would totally recommend this book, it is wonderful work of fiction. I am also very interested in reading Mr. Fabry's other books, now that I know the engaging stories he is capable of writing.

I am just about a full day behind. I am sticking with it though, hopefully I can catch up tomorrow. I am really enjoying the reading though still. This week we are fully into the kings and the wonderful history contained with their stories.

My husband has told me several times he is proud of me for doing this, he has completed the Bible in just over 90 day two years ago. He has read the Bible cover to cover several times in his journey. Maybe next time we will go through it together :)

I am still on track with my Bible in 90 Days, I have been going in spurts, behind one day ahead the next my goal is to read everyday the required reading more regularly.

I really enjoyed this weeks readings: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel. The accounts from these books are so rich. I enjoy reading the stories I know fairly well learning new things as well as reading stories that seem very new. I am also doing a Ruth Bible study so reading Ruth in a day is very different from the other reading I am doing of it, but getting the overall picture is nice to go with the slow, more in depth study.

I am all caught up and am reading the Bible in 90 Days Bible. I don't know if that has made a big difference or not yet, but I do like the size and can see if I need to read somewhere other than home how convenient it would be.

I made it through Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. All of which have parts that are more work to get through than some books. There is also a lot of rich history and accounts in each, some amazing things God did for His people. I am excited to start Joshua, I know some of the wonderful accounts of Joshua. I look forward to seeing new things, just as it seems every time I read this wonderful Book.

I am still on track, I just finished the book of Exodus. I really enjoy Genesis, it is just such a rich book. The beginning of Exodus as well and the 10 Commandments, the descriptions of how to build and the building of the Ark, Table, Lampstand, garments and such gets a little long, but I am sure it is important and that is why it is in there. I did get in a group for accountability and that will be nice hopefully :)

I also ordered the Bible in 90 Days Bible, I just thought it might make it easier to read and more portable. I second guessed it because it is not like we do not have a Bible and I felt a little spoiled ordering, I hope it will get a lot of use though after I am through.

God Gave Us So Much is a treasury of three of the God Gave Us books. Included are God Gave Us the World, God Gave Us Love, and God Gave Us Heaven. They feature an adorable polar bear family.

God Gave Us the World is about other types of bears from all over the world and how each kind is suited just right to live in it's own environment. It tells of how God created Earth to be our home and created every creature in it.

God Gave Us Love is about love ;) It talks of loving others even when they are hard to love and how being patient and kind goes with love. Grampa also tells Little Cub of God's love for us and sending his son for us.

God Gave Us Heaven talks about heaven, gently about death and how wonderful heaven will be. It compares good things in this world and how much better it will be in heaven. It also tells of Jesus making it possible for us to get to heaven.

I really enjoyed these books, they are just delightful. The illustrations are so endearing and fun. I love watching Little Cub learn from her wise parents and Grampa and then being treated in such a respectful way. Too often in our culture, even in children's books, the people in authority are portrayed as mean, unintelligent, or unimportant. The content of the book is important to children and easy for them to understand in the way it is presented.

Challenges and Commitments

With the new year started I am going to participate in some challenges and make some commitments.

The first being to read the Bible in 90 Days with all the ladies at Mom's Toolbox. This is a difficult challenge that I have not completed in the past, I got quite a ways into it and let life overwhelm me. I would like to finish strong this time. I hate to think that I am approaching 30, have been a Christian for quite some time, but have not completed a cover to cover reading of the Bible.

The second being memorizing two new verses a month with the Siesta Scripture Memory Team. I enjoy memorizing scripture, but usually do it as a passive process of learning with my AWANA girls. Hearing them quote verses week after week I absorb from hearing them. I want to make a more active commitment.

I am also thinking that just for fun I will join the Jane Austen 2011 Challenge just for fun. I have never read a Jane Austen novel, just seen some wonderful movies, so reading a few this year would be great. I do not know which ones yet.

City on our Knees is a very enjoyable read. The book itself has a really fun, artistic cover. It would make a great gift to all the Toby Mac fans in your life as well as the young believers you know. I think it can show the youth who are struggling to live out their faith as well as the typical me first generation what God can really do if you are surrendered to Him. I will be excited when my children are old enough to read this book, for now I think I will lend it to my nephew.

No More Christian Nice Girl is about how Christian women fall into traps of niceness instead of goodness. The book explores the ways God has called us to be His good Christian women. It is written in a way that is easy to read and has a story running through the book demonstrating the way a nice girl lives and how she changes, it is a good way to apply what the authors are writing about to a real life scenario.

Something about No More Christian Nice Girl just didn't sit perfectly. I did enjoy it and think there are many valid points in the book. I know what it is, it is that I just don't want someone to read this book and come away with an attitude of harshness. I really did enjoy the fact that false niceness is a sin and Jesus wasn't always a "nice guy". There are times in our lives when we have to stand up and do the right thing, standing for what is good. I do not think I am a "Christian Nice Girl", but I do hope I am kind and balance out truth in love. I do recommend this book for women, especially if they feel caught in a facade of being a "nice Christian girl" and really just living a life of self-protection.

The Church Awakening is about the postmodern church. Mr. Swindoll talks about the problems the Church is facing and how the Church is dealing with issues in the postmodern culture we are living in. He points out how incorrectly some believers are dealing with them as well solutions to the problem.

The book starts out with where we are a Church. Then Mr. Swindoll identifies challenges, struggles, solutions, and priorities, using the rest of the book to hash out those themes.

I really enjoy Mr. Swindoll's point of view on the issue and his transparency of how his church has failed in this very issue and what they have done to turn things around. Directing believers back to the Bible and solutions from Scripture to be relevant in the society we are living in as believers. The book itself is an easy to understand and is written for the layperson or a pastor.

The Church History ABCs

The Church History ABCs is a trip through the alphabet with a major person from Christian history for each letter. I really enjoyed this book, the illustrations are very nice and appealing to my children. I haven't seen a book that give this great of information and summaries of the lives of saints who have gone before us. Children are introduced to John Foxe, Charles Spurgeon, and John Newton and many more Christian history makers. I can see this being a very helpful reference book to my children as they grow and a stepping point to learn more about some of other heroes of the faith.

There is also a Church History ABCs website. It has some fun printable copywork, color pages, and timelines, even a "pin the beard on the theologian" game. Great fun activities for homeschoolers using this book as part of a unit study or lesson.

God and Sex is supposed to be about what the Bible really says about Sex. I found this book offensive, not for the subject matter but for the way it mocks Christianity. I do not think this book at all portrays what the Bible really says about anything.

The Ultimate Meaning of True Womanhood by Pastor John Piper

Pastor Piper started chapter one with clarifying from the Word of God the ultimate meaning of true womanhood. He explained a little of what true womanhood is not. I have heard Pastor Piper say before that "wimpy theology makes wimpy women". I agree. Understanding our Heavenly Father and what He wants for us will enable us to be strong women. Pastor Piper gives several examples of women who are examples of true womanhood. He explains some Biblical outlines for a true woman. I enjoyed that Pastor Piper included a section dedicated to married women and single women, letting them know that God has a role for both and both are very important bringing glory to Christ.

So far this is a good book and an encouraging start.

Wild Things
The Art of Nurturing Boys

Wild Things is about boys and a little about men too. It is a book that helps parents, mothers in particular, to understand their little and big guys. Mr. James and Mr. Thomas explain The Way of a Boy, The Mind of a Boy, and The Heart of a Boy. They are therapists working with men and boys as well as dads to boys. The style of writing is engaging and the book is full of funny stories.

Wild Things should be a must read for parents of boys, I enjoyed it that much. In a time where our society try and make men irrelevant and boys behave like girls there could be no better time to get this book. I loved the insight these men provided to me as a mom and wife. At the end of each chapter there are tips to summarize ways to love and understand your boy better.

Happily Ever Laughter is a book of real life short stories from married couples including Ken Davis, Chonda Pierce, Bob Stromberg, Daren Streblow, Kendra Smiley, Jeff Allen, John Branyan, Rhonda Rhea, David Dean, Dave Veerman, and Neil Wilson.

I have to say I was a little disappointed by this book. I really enjoy Ken Davis and his comedy spots on the radio called Lighten Up. I think he is a funny man and I think that is why I was bummed. I thought the stories in the book were fun, but not as funny as I was expecting. Happily Ever Laughter would be a good book for the coffee table or whisper restroom. The stories are well written and good for a quiet moment in your day.

Family Driven Faith helps to equip Christian parents to raise Godly children in our culture. It gives parents tools and principles to train our children to be faithful to the Lord all of their lives. Dr. Baucham uses scripture to explain where we are as a society and how we can change our family if we have the courage and obedience to really disciple our children.

I love this book. I was really excited when I received this and I was definitely not disappointed. Family Driven Faith has encouraged me so much. I think it is so needed for Christian parents of our time (probably a generation or two back as well). This is a book that may step on your toes, send your to your Bible, and to your knees before our Lord. We have implemented some wonderful things in training our children including doing a catechism, which I really knew nothing about before reading Family Driven Faith. I love how children are celebrated as blessings and not a pain or a "punishment" and the important role of parents explained. There are even Take Action steps at the end of each chapter to get these ideas implemented in your family.

In short, I agree with Professor Don Whitney from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville: "Every Christian parent ought to read Family Driven Faith. I've never encountered a book on famil life that compressed so much biblical teaching, provocative thinking, sound theology, and practical help in on volume."

Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul (Revised and Expanded)

Captivating is a book for and about women. It is about setting women's hearts free and releasing them to be all they were meant to be, well what it is supposed to be about.

I didn't love this book. I didn't feel there was a strong theological basis for some of the statements made about God and His purpose and design for women. There were points that sounded very good, but left me wondering how in context a verse was applied or the scriptural basis. I came away feeling as if women were exalted above God. While I do agree that women want to be romanced and loved and that God has a special way to love women, I don't think that God thinks women are just the utmost of creation. There are many relations to pop-culture, some of which I had no clue because I had not seen such and such a movie. I enjoyed some of Mrs. Eldredge's stories of her testimony and think there are lessons to be learned, but just felt the Biblical basis was stretch. I also really liked the velum type cover, I had never seen a book jacket like that, very pretty.

Planting Season continues

Today I planted in flats melons and watermelons. I planted many seeds of each type. I planted Orangeglo Watermelons, Banana Melons, Mountain Hoosier Watermelon, Kansas Melon, and Million Dollar Melon. I think I am a little late getting my melon seeds started, but I don't like them to get very big before they get transplanted. I need to get my cucumbers and squash started soon, maybe I will get them started today as well.

I also did a flat of flowers. A couple of types of marigolds, a pansy, and viola. I also direct seeded some Mother of Pearl Poppies, I hope they come up and are a pretty as the picture.

All of these seed varieties named and the poppy picture came from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I like the selection and heirloom seed preservation from Baker Creek. I wish I could make it out to one of their festivals sometime, I am sure they are fun. Their catalog is the best I have seen, wonderful pictures and honest, accurate descriptions. It is such a good quality catalog it is worth keeping around as a reference book.

Everything is looking great so far in the garden, we have some flowers on the peas and have eaten a few radishes.

Review: Mighty Acts of God

Mighty Acts of God, A Family Bible Story Book

Illustrated by Tim O'Connor

Mighty Acts of God is a Bible story book written for elementary school-age children in mind. It is published by Crossway. A principle point of the book is to show the attributes of God displayed in the Biblical accounts, not so much about the individuals involved and how they behaved and whether or not we should imitate them. The overarching theme is to point to God's plan of redemption through out the Bible. The stories are in chronological order, both Old and New Testament. Stories include a key verse either from the story or clearly showing a lesson to be learned from the Biblical account. The verses are in the English Standard Version. There summary statements in a colored font to easily pick out the major doctrinal point. A neat feature at the end of the stories are "As For Me and My House" sections, they are practical activities or points of application to be discussed with the children.

I really enjoyed Mighty Acts of God. I think it will be a wonderful tool to teach my children about God and how the accounts in the Bible show us God's character and demonstrate His amazing love. I think too often we can get caught up in act like this Biblical person (except when they did this activity) or not like this one. Showing the consequences of human's actions is a great thing too, of course we would rather our children learn from other people's mistakes instead of making them themselves, but the real point is for God to reveal Himself to them. I have a hard time calling Bible accounts stories, because children mainly hear stories as make believe and I want my children to know these are historical events.

I really enjoyed how this book didn't put words in the individual's mouths in accounts that scripture does not state. For example, I don't really enjoy when a book says Noah said this or thought that, he may have, but the Bible doesn't state that. Might Acts of God seemed to stay true in that area for me. I also struggle with illustrations in children's Bible books. I teach my children they are probably not what Jesus or Moses or anyone in the Bible looked like, they are an idea of what they may have looked like. The illustrations in this book are a lovely artist's viewpoint. I think parents will still have a lot of questions to answer and definitions to explain while reading this to their children. There are some words defined within the story, but the language of this book is more complex for younger children, not that is a bad thing, just something I observed with my young children. I think it gives opportunity for the parents to further instruct their children and expands a child's vocabulary. I am thankful that I will have Mighty Acts of God to use with my children, to teach them more about our wonderful Father.

Planting Season transplanting

Yesterday and today I transplanted most of my pepper and tomato plants, it has been pretty warm here and the weather is supposed to stay that way. I am going to keep a close eye on them to be safe. My tomatoes were not doing all that amazing this year, but my pepper seemed to have all made it and are great. I think the tomatoes will pull out of it once they get a little established in the bed. I am thinking they didn't have enough room in the peat pots I used. I don't think I will be using them again.

The tomatoes that were transplanted were:
Purple Russian
White Currants
Burbank
Wapsipinicon Peach
Kootenai
Mystery Seeds

I am excited about the Purple Russian, I let weeds get away from me last year so I didn't get very many of these, I think they are going to be great. I did get many of the Wapsipinicon Peach last year and they were one of my favorites, great taste and just a fun variety. Last year I received some seeds from Winter Sown since I like to experiment I asked for a mixed cherry and a mixed tomato seed packets. It was very fun trying to identify and getting to try some new things, so those are the mystery seeds. I hope to see how the Kootenai taste, I am sure they are going to be better than store bought no matter what, I am mainly growing them because they are so early and originated in Idaho. I use almost exclusively heirloom seed, but I am wanting to try the new Idaho variety tomatoes that the University of Idaho has been developing. They are open pollinated and should be great producers in Idaho.

For peppers I have
Jalapeno
Alma Paprika
Yellow Monster
and some more I can't think of off the top of my head

I think I am going to have plenty of Jalapenos this year, they did by far the best seedlings. I am excited to try some paprika peppers to see if I can make my own paprika. Yellow Monsters are hopefully going to live up to my hopes for them as well, I really enjoy sweet peppers and these are massive. See in this picture from Baker Creek!
