Unending Devotion by Jody Hedlund

http://jodyhedlund.com/
Unending Devotion
by Jody Hedlund

Unending Devotion is about a lady named Lily on a mission to find her sister.  She is living in the late 1800s and is working with a man who is her foster parent taking photographs of men in the logging industry.  Lily finds herself in many dangerous circumstances, most of which are caused by her determination and rushing into situations before she had the help she realistically needed.  Unending Devotion has some very tense dramas and is hard to put down.

I really enjoyed Unending Devotion.  It had a bit of romance in it, but wasn't a book that was full of romantic overtones or plain lust provoking imagery.  I would recommend this book.

Call of a Coward by Marcia Moston

Call of a Coward
The God of Moses and the Middle-Class Housewife
by Marcia Moston

Call of a Coward is about a husband feeling the call of the Lord for his family to go and serve as missionaries in Guatemala and the struggle with the decision and the events that unfolded.

This is a wonderful book.  It is a moving memoir.  I was hoping it would make me wonder what I would do should my husband be lead somewhere I didn't think I would want to go and it did just that.  I really enjoy how Mrs. Moston takes us through the journey of her feelings and the process of this major decision.  I enjoyed that it wasn't just a "Disney" type ending or situation once the choice was made.

I would recommend this book for any Christian, it would be a great one to pick up to take on a vacation or over a holiday break because it is not too long and is very enjoyable yet challenging.

The Company by Chuck Graham

The Company
by Chuck Graham

The Company is about the world after a huge meteor strikes Earth and what life is like for the few survivors.  The story picks up seventy years after the world went dark and the mysterious visitors brought light back to the people of Brigos Glen.  When a group of Brigons are choosen and taken to a conference in the Outlands, an area where people have not tried to go for many years, but the ones who did never came back.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Company.  Reading an allegory of modern times was a nice change of pace from the current type of books I read.  The way Mr. Graham presents the Trinity in the book is a helpful explanation to believers and nonbelievers.  He made several complex subjects come to life in real world examples.  In the times we are living in I think The Company is a wonderful book for Christians as well as a book that friends or family would be happy to receive and better understand what Christians believe.

The Book of Man by Bennett

The Book of Man
by William J. Bennett

The Book of Man is a wonderful collection of stories, articles, poems, letters, and other wonderful writings about what it really means to be a man.  This book is divided into areas of life that apply to men: politics, leisure, work, war, with women and children, and in prayer.  There are many authors and stories that you will recognize, but many more that I did not know about.

This book is wonderful for men, such an encouragement and wonderful examples of strong men.  Men of courage, honor, strength, integrity, and wonderful qualities of true men.  Men who have sacrificed for their country and families.

As a parent of boys this book is something that will be book that will be a reference all through their growing years.  I think this book would be such blessing for a dad to read to his sons as they grow up.  It will provide true examples of what being a man is all about in a culture that devalues men and boys, generally portraying them as stupid, irrelevant, or brutes.  The Book of Man would also make a great gift, maybe to a young man turning 12 or 13 or parents of a son of any age.  I think this book would best be used in a mentoring relationship, as all ways of helping a boy grow into a man.

My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade

My Stubborn Heart
by Becky Wade

My Stubborn Heart is about a single woman, Kate, who has had a couple of serious relationships, only finding out they were not the ones God had planned for her.  Kate goes to spend some time with her grandmother renovating a family property.  The man her grandmother has hired for the remodeling is a man who is deeply wounded and private, Kate is determined to help melt some of his heart of stone.

I enjoyed this book.  I am not much of a romance novel person and parts of it made me a little uneasy, but it is a good read.  I am sure for someone who is a lover of romance it would be more enjoyable.  I continued to read because the book has a great story that was also revolving around some other fun characters besides Kate and the hurting hero.  I also enjoyed how the story took some unexpected turns and was not just a love story that was happily ever after the moment the two main characters met.  I didn't enjoy a couple instances of inappropriate language, these were not the big bad curse words, but words I don't want to hear around my home.  And I certainly wouldn't look to this novel as a way to find a Godly husband, or for young girls to get that idea that the guy they have the "hots" for will become a Christian.

Review: Glamorous Illusions

Glamorous Illusions
by Lisa Bergren

Glamorous Illusions is about a young woman named Cora, whose life as she knows it wasn't what she thought it always was.  She ends up taking a wonderful, sometimes frightening, and grand adventure.  This is the first book in the Grand Tour Series by Lisa T. Bergren.

This book was wonderful.  It was an exciting read, that wasn't too focused on the mushy love aspect of a young woman's life.  It is a great glimpse into Cora's life as a now upper class lady, living in a time where status was very important.  I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to the next books in the series.  This is a book I would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing, lovely read.

I didn't realize this was the same author as the "God Gave Us..." books, that was really fun to learn.  We have read over and over the God Gave Us So Much :)

Embraced By God Facebook Party

Embraced by God is a 21-day encounter that shares the unconditional love of God. "If you watch what the media says as to where we should find our identity--" says Babbie, "--money, beauty, power and technology--you'll just be confused about who you are and what your purpose is. As a culture we are trying to buy or sell what can only be administered to the soul by Jesus."

I really enjoyed this book.  It is like getting comfort from a great friend about the love of God for us, because of Jesus.  Because of Him God loves us as Him!  What an amazing thought.  This book is more in-depth than a regular devotional.  It is really more of a chapter to read with stories and scripture and wonderful loving truths from the Word, but in a daily format for continuing encouragement.  As I read it, I enjoyed it and was immediately thinking of someone in my life who could use a copy as soon as possible.  I think many will find hope from Ms. Mason, a spiritual mentor who has been walking with and serving the Lord for 50 years!

The Captivating Heart by Dale Cramer

The Captivating Heart
by Dale Cramer

The Captivating Heart is a story about an Amish family that has moved to Mexico's Paradise Valley for religious freedom.  The times are very hard; there are bandits raiding, stealing, kidnapping and just terrorizing the country sides.  The Bender family was the first family to homestead in the valley, a few more families have moved down to establish the settlement.  Life is always hard work for an Amish family, it is even harder breaking new ground and doing it without the large support system and cooperation of other families.

I loved this book.  I didn't realize when I started reading it that it was the second in the series of The Daughters of Caleb Bender. I was just a page or two in when I realized that I was familiar with the names and the storyline.  I was excited then, I had read the first in the series and didn't know there was a second or that it was what I was reading.  These stories are full of drama and suspense, this one pulled me in like the last and I finished it in less than a 24 hour period!  I would definitally recommend The Captivating Heart, even if you have not read Paradise Valley but as far as I am concerned you might as well start at the first and fall in love with the family and then continue in The Captivating Heart.

You can read a sample chapter to see if it appeals to you.

The Take Action Bible

The Take Action Bible

I really like the idea of the Take Action Bible, a Bible that gives ideas on how to make your faith active.  There are many stories in the midst of the text of people taking action and some questions on personal take action pages, asking how you could take action in a certain way.  There is a nice concordance in the back and it is a very useable and portable Bible to take with you.  I also like that is NKJV, since that is what our family uses to memorize (our AWANA clubs use it, so we keep consistent).

I also like that Thomas Nelson has partnered with World Vision for a project.  God's Word in Action is a very neat site, one that I hope catches the attention of Christians.  There are three main areas of the site to Take Action, Get Inspired, and Share a Story.  You can sign up to get weekly Bible verses and a Challenge email.

 Bible Features include:
  • 48 full-color pages
  • 15 real-life stories show how to take action with God's Word
  • 52 Take Action ideas
  • Personal Take Action note pages
  • New King James Version® (NKJV) UltraSlim Bible text
  • Translation and text notes
  • Words of Jesus in red
  • Concordance
  • Bible reading plan

Mugabe and the White African on PBS

One family’s stand for Justice – catch the story on PBS 7/26!

I'll be blogging about the book Mugabe and the White African later this month, but I wanted to let you know that Point of View will air the documentary Mugabe and the White African on Tuesday, July 26th.

The film tells the story of Mike Campbell and his family of three generations of Zimbabwean farmers as they attempt to keep their farm under Mugabe's "land reform." Watch the trailer for the documentary below and visit the PBS Point of View website for your local listing. http://www.pbs.org/pov/tvschedule/

The book Mugabe and the White African (Lion Books, distributed by Kregel Publications, July 15, 2011, ISBN: 978-0-7459-5546-9, $14.95) written by Mike Campbell's son-in-law Ben Freeth provides more detail regarding the family's struggles and court battles. The book chronicles the deeply moving and life-threatening struggle of a Christian family from Zimbabwe to protect their legally owned farmland, to protect the lives and livelihoods of all those working on the farm, and to live to see justice.

Freeth lays bare a beautiful but lawless land fouled by fear. A 'Clockwork Orange' state where racism, greed, and violence are ultimately humbled by almost unimaginable courage. Richly described, bravely chronicled, and utterly compelling.
-Mike Thomson, Radio Foreign Affairs Correspondent, BBC

Ben Freeth has an extraordinary story to tell. Like that of many white farmers, his family's land was "reclaimed" for redistribution by Mugabe's government. But Ben's family fought back. Appealing to international law, they instigated a suit against Mugabe's government in the SADC, the Southern African equivalent of NATO. The case was deferred time and again while Mugabe's men pulled strings. But after Freeth and his parents-in-law were abducted and beaten within inches of death in 2008, the SADC deemed any further delay to be an obstruction of justice. The case was heard, and was successful on all counts.

But the story doesn't end there. In 2009 the family farm was burned to the ground. The fight for justice in Zimbabwe is far from over--this book is for anyone who wants to see into the heart of one of today's hardest places and how human dignity flourishes even in the most adverse circumstances.

    Pressing Into Thin Places

    Pressing into Thin Places
    Encouraging the Heart toward God
    by Margaret Harrell Wills, EdD

Pressing into Thin Places is a lovely little book.  It is filled with short stories that contain poems and Bible scripture that uplift your soul.  Thin Places are described as places where the veil between heaven and earth is a thinner, where you can feel the things of God in a more real way than in day to day living.  I really enjoyed the stories and encouragement from Pressing into Thin Places.  This is a great book for any friend, particularly one who is struggling with depression or a place in their life that is really tough.  I think it is encouraging to any believer to read through these at a slow pace and ponder the love of God, snuggled up with a nice cup of tea (or coffee if you prefer).

    Pressing Into Thin Places Q&A

My full review will be coming soon, but for now here is a Question and Answer session with Pressing into Thin Places author Margaret Harrell Wills.

Q&A With Margaret Harrell Wills, Ed.D
Author of Pressing into Thin Places

Q: Your book is titled Pressing into Thin Places. What is a “thin place”?

In the Celtic tradition, a “thin place” is the place where the veil that separates heaven and earth is nearly transparent. It is a place where we experience a deep sense of God’s presence in our everyday world. A thin place is where, for a moment, the spiritual world and natural world intersect. It can be a sudden momentary awareness or profound unexplainable experience.

Q: Pressing into Thin Places is a collection of stories, experiences, and learned truths expressed through poetry and prose. How are you hoping that readers connect with the experiences shared and those “thin places”?

Through the book I wanted to share a few “thin place moments” and encourage readers to have eyes to see the gifts of thin places through their own experiences. There are moments when we do feel the divine breaking through into our world. We feel unified and connected with God. It is not an intellectual knowing; it is felt in the spirit. Every once in a while, God draws the curtain and lets us see. He gives us reminders that, though we are tethered to this earth, there is another realm of reality just as real. Every once in a while, He lifts the veil. He thins the space between heaven and earth. He lets us experience the “thin place.” Ultimately, He helps our faith.

Q: Pressing into Thin Places gives readers permission to be authentic and to acknowledge doubt, questions, even depression. Often we experience guilt over these sometimes realities, fearing they show a weak faith. But how can facing these circumstances or emotions actually strengthen faith and reveal the presence of God in our lives?

We all have ups and downs. We are emotional beings. This is part of life. But can we dial up different thoughts? Can we change our feelings? Many times, I believe we can. Not too long ago I came across a verse in 1 Samuel 30. The chapter talked about a time when David was defeated by his enemies, rejected by all those around him and discouraged to the core. In verse 6, it says, “And David strengthened himself in the Lord.” How do we strengthen ourselves in the Lord? I believe we do what a verse in Psalms suggests: “And then one day I went into your sanctuary and thought” (Ps. 73:17). We strengthen ourselves in the Lord by going into His presence and letting Him guide our thinking. Many of the Psalms tell us that David worshipped and meditated on the scriptures. This was no exception. He received new purpose, vision, and authority. He waited patiently to become king.

Q: Why do you think we fear admitting doubt or struggles with faith?

Fear wants to rise and speak to the bottom corners of our mind. It will remind us not to be vulnerable. We will remember what happens when we risk psychological safety or abandon feelings of superiority. We will remember our nakedness. We will feel the wash of old fears and the pull of old attitudes and the temptations of old behaviors. But our heart, where our choice and our spirit live, desires our Father and His Kingdom. And our Teacher taught us to pray.

Q: It seems that more and more we all encounter people who profess to believe that God exists, but the crisis of faith arises in God’s goodness. What do you say to the reader who struggles to believe that God is good and loving?

Jesus says we can trust our Heavenly Father. We are safe, we are protected, and we are guided when we cooperate with God’s purpose and God’s way of doing things. We become participants in the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of God’s grace on earth. Jesus reminds us over and over again that we must have faith. We must believe in the fact that we are safe and that “good” will result as we submit our will to His Way. This submission is powerful. It defragments our life and gives us spiritual significance and wholeness of soul. This submission results in the process of spiritual transformation. Along the way, we are rewarded by “faith surprises” as resources of the Kingdom of Heaven are available to make changes in us, in others, and in the way things are.

Q: What do you hope that readers will take away from Pressing into Thin Places?

At the crux of this message of greater connection with God is the gospel message. Jesus encourages us to see our short space of time on this earth in the light of eternity. He instructs us to remember that there are two realities: a physical reality and a spiritual reality. We are first and foremost spiritual beings called to follow Christ’s teachings.

    The Spirt in Baseball

    The Spirit in Baseball
by Kathryn Nixon & Ava Boudreau

The Spirit in Baseball is a children's book about the Fruit of the Spirit and examples of how it is shown to others in baseball.  Each trait has a two-page spread with colorful illustrations and the example of how to demonstrate a Christ-like attitude in the game of baseball.

This book would be a great gift to a child who enjoys playing on their local baseball or t-ball team.  A really fun little addition to the book is the hidden fruit picture in each of the traits.  There is a page near the end of the book by Trot Nixon, a professional baseball player and 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series Champion.  Mr. Nixon is married to Kathryn.  There is also a Baseball Prayer and a page for autographs that would be fun for the child to have their team sign.

    The Spirit in Football

    The Spirit in Football
by Kathryn Nixon & Ana Boudreau

The Spirit in Football is much like The Spirit in Baseball.  It shows how to apply the fruit of the spirit when you are on a sports team.  The Spirit of Football includes a forward by Matt Hasselbeck.  It would also make a great gift to a child with a love for football.

Branded, Sharing Jesus with a Consumer Culture by Tim Sinclair

    Branded
Sharing Jesus with a Consumer Culture
    by Tim Sinclair

Branded is a thought-provoking book about how the Church relates to the culture to spread the message of Christ.  It is not so much about a method of how-to, it is more about why-to.  Mr. Sinclair explains how marketing works for corporations, how it changes over the years even for the same product.

I really have enjoyed Branded.  It was a little uneasy to think of marketing Jesus.  It isn't marketing in the way I initially thought he was going to mean, the WWJD, bumpersticker, Christian t-shirt way.  It is more about living out the Christian life in the way that God's people should.  Living a life where relationship is important and loving people deeply shines through for Christ.  Not the health and wealth false gospel, but that life is hard and God works in ways we don't understand, but He is still good.  Mr. Sinclair points out that if you don't believe in a product you can't sell it, weather it is vacuums or a relationship with a great God.  So it isn't about pulling one over on people, it is about really showing the love of Christ.

I had many quotes from this book that I loved to read and reread, it just summed up the way I feel in many instances.  I really enjoyed Branded and I think with the study guide it would be fun to do with a group and ponder what kind of difference we are really making.  It is also really just a great book to read on your own.

That's When I Talk to God

That's When I Talk to God
    By Dan & Ali Morrow

That's When I Talk to God follows a young girl through her day showing that anytime is a good time to pray, otherwise known as talking to God.  Children learn they can pray when they are afraid, joyous, have questions, whenever they need to.  It is very nicely illustrated children's book.  My children enjoyed this book as well, they like books about children and faith and this is a sweet picture of a Christian family.

    Fully Engaged

    Fully Engaged
How to Do less and Be more
    by John Busacker

Fully Engaged is about how to make your life more meaningful by doing less "busy" things and being really involved and committed to the things you do choose to do.  There are self-assessments and evaluations to see where your life is now and plans of action to change your life into what you want it to become.

I enjoyed reading Fully Engaged, I think there are useful pieces of information for our hectic, but never really making a difference lives.  Most points are very straightforward and easy to understand.  Mr. Busacker has a very clear writing style, which I appreciate.  I think that the recommendations are based on Biblical values.  There is space to reflect on the dreams for your life in many areas including spiritual, physical, community, learning and several more.  I would recommend this book to someone who is seeking more out of this life and recognizes the potential of the "could be".

    The Trigger

    The Trigger
    A Novel on the Revelation
    by Hon Hoh

The Trigger is a novel following three men and their role in reaching the last unreached people group on the earth and ushering in the Second Coming of Christ.  In this fast paced book we can imagine some of what the demonic world may look like and how it operates, as well as a possible glimpse of the heavenly realms activities and the duties of angels like archangels Michael and Gabriel.  We experience the bowls of wrath and the sounding of the trumpets.

I really enjoyed The Trigger.  I love a good novel and one based on the end times is fascinating to me.  I at this point do not have a set view on when Christians will be raptured, whether it will be pre-tribulations, mid-tribulation, or post-tribulation.  I do know that no one knows the day or the hour and that Jesus Christ is coming back again!  I feel like with the recent events related to Harold Camping, that I must mention that I feel great sadness for his followers and believers and even for Mr. Camping himself, he is deceived.  And maybe because of that I was a little sensitive to the book and the situations in toward the end where the three men seem to know what the trigger will be and when the end will come.  I did enjoy The Trigger very much it is a great novel and a fun read for the imagination.
